If I say Defender what comes to your mind? The Tunisian desert, the lions of safaris in Kenya, the Amazon Forest of the Camel Trophy, the Icelandic geysers, but also that one summer in Sardinia looking for unknown coves with your girlfriend! To sum up, Defender means traveling, and many of our customers know how to do it with style!
In particular, today we are going to “cuddle” the car of a friend of ours and a great traveler. Marco asked us to refresh the look of his 2004 Defender TD5 by taking advantage of this forced break due to the pandemic. Instead of traveling the Silk Road, as scheduled, last year the car was completely repainted with black mudguards and the roof and the interior were completely renewed. Its fifteen years of life and the thousands of travelled kilometers happened to be felt!
During its first lifetime this Defender accompanied a rich lady from Rome on her holidays to the Costa Smeralda, but in 2014 it became Marco's new toy.
And I don't call it a toy for nothing.
The reasons that lead Marco to purchase a TD5 have deep roots. After traveling around the world, our client fell in love with southern Africa by visiting those places several times with cars rented on site and already set up. He started with Namibia, which he crossed with a Toyota Hilux from Bushlore Africa, until he decided to buy his own mean of transport and to prepare it according to his family’s needs.
It was in those years that he learnt the story of Nino Cirani. He was a photographer anda journalist, one of the first Italian explorers in the world by Land Rover. A record-man in solitary mileage. One of his most famous trips was from Alaska to Tierra Del Fuego, with a Land Rover 109 that he prepared himself. He gave a significant change to the design of the AirCamping tents that we all still use today, developing the product in the field and wrote a book that has become a reference point for many generations of travelers: “The Car Raid. How Where When”. Marco already owned this book for years!
His Land Rovers had a well-known nickname, Aziza –“cute” in Arabic- and they became famous, especially the Aziza 3, the red one with a white stripe across the entire side. It looked exactly like that model of the Bburago that Marco played for hours in the 80’s!
The jump from plastic toy to petrol burning toy was romantically unavoidable, in fact, Marco transformed that TD5 used to the ease of the Costa Smeralda into a super-equipped globetrotter with whom he visited many extraordinary places: Iceland, Tasmania, Australia and many others. Nowadays Marco works for an important transport company, so the organization of these trips was so easy to him!
I can't even describe it: dedicated set-up, reinforced transmission, Overlander navigation system, double spare wheel, double battery, kitchen, lockers, water and fuel tanks, additional lights… We have been dealing with this vehicle for seven years, it has everything you need on any occasion, wherever you are! Se dico Defender a voi cosa viene in mente? Il deserto Tunisino, i leoni sul cofano nei safari in Kenia, l’Amazzonia dei Camel Trophy, i geyser Islandesi, ma anche quell’estate in Sardegna a cercare calette sconosciute con la tua ragazza! Insomma Defender vuol dire viaggiare, e molti dei nostri clienti lo sanno fare in grande stile!
In particolare oggi stiamo finendo di coccolare l’auto di un nostro amico e grande viaggiatore. Marco ci ha chiesto di dare una rinfrescata al look del suo Defender TD5 del 2004 approfittando di questa pausa forzata dovuta alla pandemia che ci ha colpiti. Invece che percorrere la Via de Seta, come da programma, nell’ultimo anno la macchina è stata completamente riverniciata con parafanghi e tetto neri e gli interni sono stati del tutto rinnovati. I quindici anni di vita e le decine di migliaia di kilometri percorsi cominciavano a farsi sentire!
Nella sua prima vita questo Defender accompagnava una ricca signora romana nelle sue vacanze in Costa Smeralda, fino a quando, nel 2014 divenne il nuovo giocattolo di Marco.
E non lo chiamo giocattolo a caso.
Le motivazioni che portano Marco all’acquisto di un TD5 hanno radici profonde.
Dopo aver viaggiato in tutto il mondo, il nostro cliente si innamorò dell’Africa del sud, visitando quei luoghi diverse volte con vetture noleggiate in loco e già allestite. Ha iniziato con la Namibia attraversata con un Toyota Hilux della Bushlore Africa fino a decidere di comprarsi un ferro proprio e prepararselo secondo le esigenze sue e della sua famiglia, seguendo gli standard sudafricani che ormai conosceva bene!
Fu in quegli anni che conobbe la storia di Nino Cirani. Fotografo e giornalista, uno dei primi esploratori italiani nel mondo in Land Rover. Un record man nel macinare kilometri in solitaria. Per capirci, uno dei suoi viaggi più celebri fu dall’Alaska alla Terra Del Fuoco, con un Land Rover 109 da lui preparato. Il personaggio è poliedrico, diede una svolta progettuale significativa alle tende AirCamping che usiamo ancora oggi tutti noi, sviluppando il prodotto sul campo e scrisse un libro che è divenuto un punto di riferimento per molte generazioni di viaggiatori: “Il Raid Automobilistico. Come Dove Quando”. Marco questo libro, ormai introvabile, ce l’ha sul comodino da anni!
Le sue Land Rover avevano un noto soprannome, Aziza -carina in arabo- e divennero famose, soprattutto la Aziza 3, quella tutta rossa con una riga bianca sull’intera fiancata. Esattamente come quel modellino della Bburago con cui Marco, negli anni 80, da ragazzino, giocava ore ed ore fantasticando avventure.
Il salto da giocattolo di plastica a giocattolo che brucia benzina è stato romanticamente inevitabile, e così Marco ha trasformato quel TD5 abituato all’agio della Costa Smeralda in una globetrotter super attrezzata con cui ha girato moltissimi posti straordinari: Islanda, Tasmania, Australia e molti altri. Marco lavora per una impresa di trasporti che fa capo alla seconda realtà mondiale di trasporto merci marittime, quindi organizzare questi trasporti in paesi che non siamo abituati ad associare ad un viaggio in auto è stato per lui facile!
Non stò neanche a descriverla, assetto dedicato, trasmissione rinforzata, sistema di navigazione Overlander, doppia ruota di scorta, doppia batteria, cucina, gavoni, serbatoi acqua e carburante, luci aggiuntive, sono sette anni che ci occupiamo di questo mezzo, ha tutto quello che ti serve in ogni occasione, in qualunque luogo tu sia!
